What happens during a pediatric dental cleaning and exam?
For many parents, knowing what will happen before an appointment can make a child’s dental visit feel more familiar. Before the appointment

Use simple, positive language. You can explain that the dental team will count and look at the teeth, clean them, and talk with the family about keeping them healthy. Avoid promising that a visit will be painless or making the appointment sound like a test.
During the cleaning
The dental team will explain the steps in an age-appropriate way. A cleaning may include removing plaque or buildup, polishing the teeth, and reviewing brushing and flossing routines. The exact steps depend on the child’s needs and the clinician’s assessment.
Parents can ask the team to pause and explain anything that is unclear. If a child is nervous, tell the team at the start of the visit so they can discuss ways to support the child.
During the exam
